Once referred to as “emo” by isthisbandemo.com and rejected for having a “not-so-cool name” by a reputable indie label (which cannot be identified due to legal reasons), Whippin’ Shitties have been creating introspective indie punk tunes out of Boise ID for several years now. After building a strong regional following, the band is bringing more of their unique brand of midwest – er, middle of the Northwest – emo to you via their new 7″ EP, Joyland. You can also catch Whippin’ Shitties at the Treefort Music Festival this September.

While singing of love and love lost is nothing new in emo music, Whippin’ Shitties approach these subjects earnestly. Co-frontmen and guitarists Braden Carlson and Erik Richtsmeier trade off lead vocals to vibrantly express the impact of different times, both good and bad. Their storytelling is well supported by the rhythmic backbone provided by bassist Jacob Geier and drummer Anthony Taylor. The record’s last track (a cover) originated as a joke between the band and their label, you may find it to be a refreshing (and contrarian) take on something way, way, way overdone. Because ultimately, if music isn’t about expression or challenging expectations, then why make it?

Joyland is now available via Hidden Home Records
