Album Review: Evil Blizzard – The Worst Show On Earth

When Evil Blizzard emerged from the bowels of Lancashire with their debut album just five years ago it is fair to say they caused a stir with their gruesome blend of psyche, krautrock, post punk and a truly unique and unmistakable image. The upcoming release of Evil Blizzard‘s third album, The Worst Show On Earth, on the 29th June 2018 sees the band fulfil their potential with their new album, it’s one that sees the band truly shake off any suggestion they are a gimmick or a short term novelty act as they stride forward into musical dimensions of their own creation. 

Hello is the unusually formal introduction to their sound, the track has all of Evil Blizzard‘s hallmarks as it steadily builds up the strangeness with layers of bass and the almost unearthly cry of the vocals that abruptly comes to a halt. From here on in Evil Blizzard build up the surreal soundscape that encompasses punk, krautrock, post punk, psychedelia, industrial and space rock and melds them all together to form the hypnotic soundtrack to a disturbing musical nightmare. The album reaches it peak with the two epic closing tracks, Pull God From The Sky and the album’s title track, that makes The Worst Show On Earth an album that is unlike anything else you will encounter this, or any other, year.

For those who haven’t yet encountered Evil Blizzard it’s fair to say there is no one out there quite like them, I’ve said that about bands before as some take a unique take on a genre or add their own twist, but there really is no one out there that can be compared to them. Evil Blizzard stand alone, not just visually, but armed with no less than four bass players they make a noise that really can’t be compared to anyone else on the scene at the moment. The Worst Show On Earth comes very close to capturing the live intensity of Evil Blizzard‘s aural assault, and all I can say is that you really need to experience the macabre charms of this band, even if it is from the comparative safety of this album.
