Lost Twenties

Iconic Seducer - One Step Outside Records

Keighley, UK based trio Lost Twenties released their debut full length, Iconic Seducer at the end of last month via the diverse and independent label One Step Outside Records, the Leeds based imprint has consistently championed the underdogs of the punk scene for as long as I’ve been writing for The Punk Site. The Lost Twenties are the latest addition to their eclectic roster, and as you expect, or rather wouldn’t, this comes from a different place than the releases I’ve previously encountered from the label.

From the opening discordant chords of Best Thing I Ever Did I’m struck by the Lost Twenties having the same raw DIY feel as The Thermals, but they are in no way derivative of that band, the Lost Twenties have their own character and the album stays true to their stripped down indie punk style. Iconic Seducer is an album that will cast a broad shadow and pull fans in from all quarters, songs like I Don’t know and There Is No Danger may up the tempo, but that’s not to say this is a short stab of an album, Pixies-esque experimentation and gloriously unhinged guitar work means that the album, and it’s near hour long run time, flash past in a blur.

Iconic Seducer has a distinctly live feel where you can practically sense the sweat dripping off the walls during the recording off this impressive debut full length, the Lost Twenties have kindred spirits with the aforementioned bands and likes of The Creature Comfort, early Stone Roses and the Steve Diggle side of Buzzcocks output. There’s a distinctly pick ‘n mix approach to the album’s compositions, garage, punk, indie and psych are all present in the melting pot that is Iconic Seducer, but none of them dominate, this means that whilst the Lost Twenties are an original and uncompromising prospect, their debut album constantly provides brief moments that give the album a faint sense of deja vu.
