The Blinders

Fantasies Of A Stay At Home Psychopath - Modern Sky Records

Due out on July 17th ‘Fantasies Of A Stay At Home Psychopath’, is The Blinders second release into the album world, ‘Columbia’ arrived back in 2018 with its Clockwork Orange esk take on modern day social commentary, bringing their brand of theatrical music upon an audience that may or may not have been ready for it, giving a kick up the ass to traditional alternative rock values.

The Blinders, for all that haven’t been acquainted, are a three piece Rock/Punk/Alternative from northern England, with a huge sound that quite frankly have you wondering if maybe they have an extra three members hidden in the wings.

What are we getting with this album that maybe we didn’t get with ‘Columbia’, well very similar would be the simplistic answer, but without wasting your time trying to explain this statement, let’s just say that they have grown as a band within this eleven track offering.  With songs that definitely feel as though the lyrics and the deliverance of them are actually the heart and soul of each song, words spun like webs of thought that are then wrapped up carefully within the dark and powerfully emotionally charged music.

Kicking off with ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ is, if not only for the title alone, a statement of what may be to come, not only is this a song of moral undertones, but its soundscape fills the air with intention from the off.

The use of politically charged words are not so much obvious, but along with insights into the mental state of mind that comes from being bombarded with the pressure to achieve in order to be accepted, they are drip fed in a wonderfully poetic way. You also are moved with some very Dylan inspired moments, like ‘In This Decade’ or what about the float away brilliance of ‘Circle Song’ with its melancholy undertones that are sung with a sense of knowing.

When listening to the first album, you got the impression that there could be the potential for so much more to come, a sense of growth that has now arrived, if there is one moment that sums this up, it has to be ’Black Glass’ a masterpiece that spans six minutes.  Changes in tempo that are intertwined with moody thought provoking lyrics, a drum beat that never looses its way within the cacophony of huge guitar riffs, and a bass line that simply drives the whole thing along.

Every time you listen to this album, you get just a little more from it.  Not a throw away by any means!   The live scene can only wait with baited breath for this album to arrive on a stage near you.
