Halloween is on the horizon, a time of year that traditionally spawns releases from punk’s dark side and I can’t think of a more appropriate band to release an album at this time of year than The Cutthroat Brothers, the duo of real life Sweeney Todd‘s who are bringing a touch of seasonal horror to 2019 with their sophomore album “Taste For Evil“. Jason Cutthroat and Zeke‘s Donny Paycheck have teamed up with the legendary producer Jack Endino to realise the full horror of a “Taste For Evil“, an album of songs about blood, death, drugs, sex, black magic and bad relationships.
The overdriven title track launches you into The Cutthroat Brothers personal nightmare with a slice of dark grunge influenced rock n’ roll, whilst “Shake Move Howl Kill” shifts things back to the duo’s primal roots with a hit of dark punk blues. Each of the ten cuts on “Taste For Evil” brings a different element to the fore, from the sinister “Out Of Control” through the hellbound rock ‘n roll of “Black Candle” and the brooding menace of “Wrong“, and we’re only at the mid way point. The second half of The Cutthroat Brothers sophomore release brings more dirty and murderous rock ‘n roll, including the superb “Killing Time“, that builds to album’s slow burning finale “The King Is Dead“.
You can hear echoes from the likes of The Gun Club, The Cramps, Eagles of Death Metal and The Hives throughout “Taste For Evil“, but this is not an album that tries to reanimate the past, it just channels the dark side of rock ‘n roll and invokes it’s ghosts. The Cutthroat Brothers have carved their own blood spattered niche into rock ‘n roll and they’ve done it with gleaming razors and scissors, once you get a “Taste For Evil” there’s no going back, just recline into that barbers chair and and let The Cutthroat Brothers do what they do best.
