Wonk Unit

Love In Chapan - Cadiz Music/Plasterer

Being well aware that this was a Christmas time release, but in the true spirit of Punk this review is going out after all the hype and commercial shit is now over, and anyway this album deserves to be listened to as a celebration of Wonk not seen as a another of those less than wonderful Xmas releases. Well if we are being really honest the CD didn’t land through the mail until late (Xmas post) and being that having parties with friends and drinking over this time to precedence over typing up reviews, I have to confess it had to wait.

A live album recorded back in 2017 at Wonk Fest in The Dome London, now I know what the majority of CD/album buying fans are thinking, yep live recordings are generally pretty poor and never really give the listener a feel for what its actually like to be there, well lets give our first pat on the back to the man behind Wonk Unit,  Alex Johnson, this has not just been recorded and released soon after, you can tell that all the time and thought has gone into this piece of history, plenty of great production and hats off to the sounds guys, this has to be one of the best live shows I’ve heard on CD for a very long while (Played Loud) of course.

Full of all the Wonk Unit you could ever want, from a band that have all the social conscience that Punk should have, but also speak of the world in a very real way with no frills, fun with a capital F is how this wonderfully DIY band have not got lost in the political world that sometimes bogs down so many other bands, but never forgetting that things need to be said.

There’s not point going into all the usual “they play with all the angst and power of a punk band that has honed its skills over the years” shit, because this band is all about connecting with the fans and this recording does this perfectly, songs that all Wonk Unit fans will love and even first time listeners will get the energy!  Songs like “Bin Him”  “Lewisham” written about how in Alex’s words he was having a piss out of a train window (well listen and you will hear)  “Je M’Apelle Alex” and of course “Johnny Rambo” are all in there along with some wonderful moments that you only get at a gig.

To add to this already great recording Wonk Unit have excelled themselves in the world of DIY punk, and have added what can only be the described as the icing on the Wonky cake, a DVD of the gig also comes with this package, so all your hard earned cash is fully rewarded with the fully loaded view of the party atmosphere that is a Wonk Unit fest!  Full of all the stage diving and crowd participation that you will ever need, and just when you think your getting this all for such a piddling amount, go check out the DVD menu, yes they have only gone and added what looks like the majority of their official music videos too!

A package of truly epic DIY proportions! Worth every hard earned penny!
