Say all you want about Blink182, call them sell outs, call them posers, call them whatever you want to. But deep down, you know that they’ve done a lot of positive things for the punk rock scene. Chances are, unless you had an older sibling who was into punk, your first punk band was Blink182. I know that that’s true for me. And I know, that if it wasn’t for them, this site wouldn’t be here. I would not have gotten into punk, never would’ve started making sites (my first site was a Blink fan site), and my life would be completely different. Hell, one of the first ever cds I burnt was cleverly entitled “Best of Blink”. So it’s safe to say that even though I already own every single Blink CD, a greatest hits collection still sparked my interest.
And really, Greatest Hits is a nice collection of the band’s songs from their six CDs (not counting Buddha – which, oddly enough, doesn’t make an appearance here). Chances are you’ve heard 99% of the songs on here with all but four being big hit singles. They kick it off in chronological order with some songs from Cheshire Cat with M&Ms and Carousel, easily one of the band’s most popular tracks. From there, they then go through all their major singles like Dammit, What’s My Age Again?, All The Small Things, The Rock Show and so forth all the way to their most recent single, Always. They even including the only studio track from The Mark Tom And Travis Show, Man Overboard.
The weirdest thing about this CD though is that the main selling point is the two new bonus songs: Not Now and Another Girl Another Plant – both of which aren’t all that new. Not Now is widely availed throughout the internet and was a special bonus track on their untitled release in the UK while Another Girl Another Planet is the theme song for Travis Barker’s reality TV show, Meet The Barkers. And while this makes both these songs a lot easier to ge a hold of, it would’ve been nice to actually hear two real unreleased songs.
Blink182‘s Greatest Hits is easily summed up as this: it’s Blink182. You either love them or you hate them, and you’ve all heard the songs on this before. So the choice is up to you whether you want to pick it up or not. For fans like me, it’s a nice addition to cap off a successful career with.
