Pink Razors - Fat Wreck Chords
Do you remember when pop-punk was fun? When it was just starting, nothing too serious, just good, catchy, clean fun? The time before the onslaught of followers jumped on the bandwagon watering down the sound and making it somewhat boring? Well Calgary’s own Chixdiggit! do, and they are bringing it all back with their fourth full length album Pink Razors.
There’s no real hidden qualities in this album which makes it really stick out and memorable, rather it is a fun pop-punk album which what you see is what you get. K.J.’s nasally vocals aren’t anything spectacular but gets the job done and gets stuck in your head easily, making you want to sing along after your first or second listen. Their songs are normally up-tempo, quick songs lasting around two to three minutes with some really crazy guitar solos thrown in there for a little extra punch. Lyrically, these guys aren’t trying to change the world but rather sing about immature things such as two dollar stores, that friend of your girlfriend that hates you, finding love on the internet, good girls, and even one about a guy who ran for mayor a decade or so ago. The only time they really waver from the general pop-punk structure is onNobody Understands Me where they add a little synthesizer, but even that seems to fit nicely into the song.
As a little added bonus, they end the album off with a band commentary. They have the entire album replay itself in the background with the band members talking about each song as they play. Its one of the few times I have ever sat through an entire band commentary.
There’s not much else to say, its just a fun pop-punk album with no frills or gimmicks. It’ll probably wear off in a few months, but it will always be an album you can throw in when you’re wanting a nice straight-forward album.
