Sinkhole EP - Really Rad Records
Dead Bars are a two album under the belt band (hope there’s more in the pipeline after hearing this EP) from Seattle and have what can be only described as a unique sound, a sound that has you wondering why, why as in “why do I like it”. Sinkhole is an EP that embodies all that is good in the world of music, its simplicity is its technical brilliance. Title track ‘Sinkhole’ gives an insight into how this band can pull off something magical, a song that says how its all wrong yet it can be right, a fight with depression, a fight to be alive too, all offered up by a vocal that’s raw and unique, musically it has everything nailed down, a melody that doesn’t smother the sadness within the song, grungy guitars that sit perfectly, and an upbeat feeling that belies the core of the song.
You then move on to the middle track (sadly yes only three in total), ‘Philadelphia’ is on of those songs that as explained earlier and is a theme of this EP, that you have no idea why, but you just love it, a lyric that you struggle to understand (or is this the point of the song maybe), some things we don’t need to understand, they just are, simple banging melodies that have you nodding like your heads gonna fall of, yet the sound still feels raw enough to not be sickly and sweet, a punk track at heart.
Can you make a song with no more than two chords, of course you can, and my god does it work!, enter ‘Hidden Track’ a tune that embodies all that is pop punk yet doesn’t actually sound that way, it’s grounded in grunge, it’s heavy with melody, it has so much that is good to listen to, it never over complicates anything, even the lyric has a simplicity in it, there’s always something good out there just waiting around the corner, it describes what music is to myself and many others “there is always another great song that you just Haven’t heard yet” its a love of music thing.
Can an EP ever fulfil your hunger for great music, well listening to Sinkhole answers this question with an emphatic NO!, not when its this good. The next album can’t come quick enough.
