Dead Objectives

Illfare State / Wolves Among The Flock - Self Released

The 2018 Human Symptom album, Dead Objectives‘ full-length debut, set out the band’s stall in an uncompromising manner: here was a band fully committed to their musical and political ideals and not willing to compromise for any spurious reasons of popularity or by pandering to a specific notion of what they should be doing. This individuality is also evident in their relentless and continuing commitment to the DIY ethos. This double A side single, and next year’s album, continue those themes. Recorded, mixed and mastered by the band in their own studio space, these tracks have been constructed without the pressure of working to a budget in a commercial arrangement. This freedom and, perhaps, the period of self-reflection forced by the pandemic, have resulted in changes band’s sonic landscape.

There is a maturity and intensity to these recordings that find the band travelling along a more layered sonic path, teasing out darkly intense melodic themes and dynamic shifts. Reviews of recent live shows have noted this, citing a kinship with the likes of Fields of the Nephilim and Play Dead, as well as Siouxsie – exalted company indeed, and a testament to the idea that DIY does not need to equal lo-fi. The production values are a match to the strength of the musicality. While the musical setting is more subtle, the vocal delivery retains its power and fury. The trademark roar remains undiluted. The anger is not diminished by this new subtlety. If anything, the message is more pointedly underscored by the juxtaposition of the impassioned vocal with the layered soundscape. Political themes remain Dead Objectives‘ focus. If you think ‘Boris is doing his best’ for us as a nation and taking care of society with even a shred of decency, these tracks will be uncomfortable listening.

All in all, a dark and sensuous musical experience with a strong message from a hugely respected band that have the balls to set their own agenda. The single is available on pre-order on 10″ vinyl limited to 250 copies, and will be available on the usual digital platforms. The first 100 singles come with a limited edition merch bundle including a turntable slip mat, drawstring bag, photo postcards, badges and patches. All copies of the single will come with a pull-out lyric poster.
