Rock N Roll With The Punches - Savage Magic Records

Rock N Roll With The (Knockout) Punches is more like a title that fits the bill here….

Demons are now 25 years young (well maybe a few more, but this album was delayed by a “Demon” virus) and still pushing the boundaries of Rock N Roll, not just knocking on the door of album of the month, but just kicking it fucking down and trampling over whoever is behind it, a party of Punk, Glam, Rock, Hip Hop, Grunge and Garage is what this anniversary album is.

One day I’ll get to visit Sweden and wow there is a party to be had!, this album takes everything this band has to give and wraps it up in one unholy package of  musical explosions, songs that maybe old, but what a new life they have been given here.  Re-recorded in glorious technicolour and given a breath of fresh northern air, we the listeners are the winners here, this is not any old best of album (although technically that’s exactly what it is), this is a triumph of thought and commitment to giving us all the music we love, but in a whole new package.

‘Riot Salvation’ is the kick off song on this kick in the face album, it slams you right there square in the middle of the chest, and why not start with a song that originally was released on cassette (yep we do remember such things, us oldies), pure 70’s punk Rock n Roll in a live sounding 2 mins 50 seconds. This is swiftly and unforgivingly followed by so many killer moments, its hard to pick the ones that deserve a mention over others, so let’s just try and pack some in here and leave you to go and discover all the rest, and boy you won’t be disappointed.  ‘Six Pack of Champagne’ is a song that has you conjuring up that party in the mansion you’ve just gate crashed with ya mates on your birthday, a banging tune with a banging head at the end to boot.  ‘Tragedy’ has all the traits of a Replacements song with added sing-a-long which is injected wonderfully by the added vocal of Vanja Lo Renberg.

‘Sparkle’ feels like System Of A Down on acid, an epic anthem of a dystopian world where relationships are never going to work.  This is followed by the track of the album in my humble opinion, ‘Come A Day’ is that 70’s Slade, 90’s Hellacopters, volcano of a song, a song that will and should stick with you for a very long time, and with a line from the best Hip Hop song of all time no less “Don’t push me cos I’m close to the edge, I’m trying not to lose my head” kinda says it all about this album in more ways than one, its pushes you off that cliff and into the crashing waves of Rock N Roll that will consume you and spit you out at the other end like a rag doll. Worth every second of pummelling I’d say.

If you have never had the pleasure of Demon’s, then lets just say this best of/reinvented best of album is something you will hear and then realise your life was never until now, as musically complete as you thought it was!
