Denver Harbor

Scenic - Universal Records

When Fenix*TX silently disappeared and broke up a couple years ago, a lot of their fans were disappointed. So when Denver Harbor was announced, they automatically jumped onto everyone’s radar screens as people discovered it was the new band of former Fenix*TX front man and guitarist, Will Salazar, along with former guitarist Chris Lewis. They had a lot of pressure on them to create an amazing debut album that went in par with Fenix*TX‘s prime releases, and unfortunately, they didn’t succeed.

The twelve song debut, Scenic, shows a few high points here and there, but fall short on more then one occasion. Kicking off the album is a great drum solo by Ilan Rubin before they jumped into the first track,Xenophobia where we get to finally hear the band; and it is a generic pop-punk or pop-rock sound that you hear all over the place. There is rarely anything new or captivating throughout the album, although they are able to switch tempos regularly. There’s the quick paced rock of Picture Perfect Wannabe followed by reggae anthems in The Ride and some slower melodies in My Holiday (Save Me). But even with all these tempo changes, it still gets boring. You feel like you’ve heard it all before and it doesn’t incite any type of emotion within the listener.

Maybe Scenic would have done well in the mid-nineties rock scene, but in 2004, it falls short. There’s really not much else to say about it.
