Millhouse Van Halen

1 - Horn And Hoof Records

Millhouse Van Halen is a singer-songwriter who comes from the unlikeliest of punk backgrounds, the Derbyshire market town of Glossop in the UK. This is not his only frustration in life as he describes himself as a “Punk drummer sick and tired of being stuck behind the drums”, this secondary source of frustration would seem to be from his tenure on the drum stool for label mates Tio Rico, where he lurks behind his kit and the other two members. Milhouse Van Halen has announced he will be releasing twelve EP’s over the course of the next year, ‘1‘ is somewhat unsurprisingly the first in the series of the planned releases and presumably the second instalment will be unveiled next month.

What you get in ‘1‘ is two acoustic tracks that are an alternative outlet for Millhouse Van Halen‘s frustrations beyond beating the skins for Tio Rico, the opening track ‘Paper Lanterns‘ is a delicate, melancholy and subtle introduction that is more folk than punk, the second track deals with the frustrations of ‘Unemployment‘, this one is more punk than folk and you can imagine this track easily translating to full amplified glory. The two tracks on ‘1′ show two very different sides to Millhouse Van Halen, as you can probably guess I’m more drawn to the EP’s second track, but this is a promising start and I’m looking forward to hearing what else he has up his sleeve as this series of EP’s unfold. One thing is clear and that is that Millhouse Van Halen is more than just a sticksman, if nothing else is might just make the other two members of Tio Rico lay off the drummer jokes for a bit.
