Final Girl - Self Released

Slalom D have released new music!

Now normally a single might not qualify for a full review, but because this is an outstanding new release from a band that have grown and grown over the last 18 months or so, we are gonna stretch things and call this release a 3 track EP.

‘Final Girl’ was released on 31st November and has already been touted as single of the year, well by myself anyway.

Slalom D play gritty melodic punk rock with a sound and attitude all of their own, lead singer Fiona Duncan joined the band after the loss of original front man Craig back in 2019, this was a pivotal moment for the band, moving on and upward, I’m sure Craig would be so proud of how they have taken what he started by the scruff of the neck and not only carried on, but hit new heights

The title track ‘Final Girl’ snaps into life like any other punk song, with searing guitar riff that would fit in at the beginning of any punk song, what sets this apart is, what backs it up, a bass line that just stands it up to be counted, a drum beat that fills all the spaces in between perfectly, and finally a vocal that has empowerment dripping from every word.

Next up ‘Step Out Of Line’ with the line “theres babies washed up on the shoreline” how can you not be moved by this, a moment in time that should never be forgotten, a refugee crisis of epic proportions that not only deserves singing about, but as the song builds it also hits out at those who let it happen too. You might say that with lyrics like this, the music should only be secondary, but not with Slalom D, they have draped the words with a splash of brilliance from start to finish.

Then just when you think they have nailed it, the last track, a remix of the title track, smashes it out if the park, sublime and unforgettable.

Musically special, lyrically honest and vocally proud.
