Portland, OR's The Brickabrats have released their debut single and video, Fun Night, that was mixed by Mark Kaeder with…
Nothing Is More - SideOneDummy Records
It’s been a while since Go Betty Go first appeared on the SideOneDummy catalogue with their debut EP Worst Enemy, and while I can’t be sure what the band was up to during that break, I’m sure that the California foursome spelt a while crafting their new full length Nothing Is More because it is leaps and bounds above the EP from a few years ago.
Nothing Is More still follows in the same lane as Worst Enemy – bouncy, pop-punk with female vocals from an all girl punk band – but it is much tighter than before. They no longer go for the instant catchyness, but rather a slightly more complex and fuller song. They don’t follow the same structure every song, but actually change it up quite often now. Ticking Bombs is mostly acoustic which makes the smooth vocals stand out much more – add in the backup vocals in the chorus and you’re singing along and holding your lighter in the air. The bridge in Last Laugh with the added “woahs” send the song into the final stretch with more confidence than before. Then the use of an accordion to something similar on The Pirate Song really makes it stand out that much more.
Of course, the band still stays true to their Argentinean roots with a few Spanish songs, Donde Voy and No Hay Pardon which initially throws you off but does have a very nice sound. Really, the only annoying aspect of the entire album is the cell phone in I’m From LA, although I can see why they are using it, it annoys the hell out me whenever I hear it.
It may not be as catchy as Worst Enemy but Nothing Is More is a much more complete album in every possible way. Its a fun, easy listening album that can be thrown on repeat for ages.
