Goodbye Chapel Hill - Nice Guy Records

You know that feeling when you get after hearing a really crappy band? That like slow, gnawing, painful headache throbbing in the back of your skull? Annoying isn’t it? You try to find a way to get rid of it, but other then rubbing your eyes, you rarely come up with many more ideas. That is, until now. For I have just discovered the cure to that dreaded headache. What is this important scientific discovery you ask? Well, the cure, is none other then J. Page‘s debut EP, Goodbye Chapel Hill.

The first dose of the remedy gives you a soothing set of raspy vocals. These vocals could easily be coming from The Lawrence Arms‘ Brendan Kelly or Hot Water Music‘s Chuck Ragan They are incredibly intense and very raw, which gives the sound much more character and sincerity then they would be if they were polished. They seem scratchy and hoarse at times, like on Unlucky In Cards while on Goodbye Chapel Hill they are slightly smoother, but still pack enough punch to give off a nice raw sounding vibe as they ask you “What the fuck is this?

Now, as the haze starts to lift from your eyes, you still aren’t fully awake – and that’s when the one-two punch of the instruments come slamming in to eliminate that ever dreary headache. Its moderately paced three chord punk rock. Its not too slow to put you to sleep, but not to fast that it makes you feel as if you’re missing your daily intake of ritalin.

So there we have it, the cure to get rid of the nagging headache of listening to a boring CD. A few listens to this short five song EP, and the feeling is gone and replaced with emotions of excitement and energy. Now, we just need to hope that their full length will be able to keep the momentum going.

Oh, and don’t forget, Bring Me A Beer, Asswipe.
