Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah - Fat Wreck Chords
One of the greatest punk rock cover bands around, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, are back with their new album, Ruin Jonny’s Bar Mitzvah. This CD is set up slightly different then the band’s previous work. It is a live album recorded at Jonny Wixen’s Bar Mitzvah in Agoura Hills, California, where the band performed 14 new tracks for Jonny and his friends.
The fourteen track album features a wide range of cover songs from bands like The Beatles, Styx, Helen Reddy, and Billy Joel. One standout song that they cover is Led Zeppelin’sStairway To Heaven. For some, this cover will be blasphemy, for others, it will be good. Personally, I’ve never really seen what the big deal was for the song, its good, but I’ve heard better. So I like the cover song, gives it a bit more of a punch. In addition to all of the band cover songs, The Gimme Gimmes also decided to cover a bunch of traditional songs during the performance. They have O Sole Mio, which is a traditional Italian song I believe, but I maybe wrong. The traditional Scottish track Auld Lang Syne, and TWO versions of the Hebrew Hava Nagila song; one of which is done to the Feliz Navida tune. These traditional songs thrown in here, make for a slightly more interesting album. Ending the album, they threw in a little bonus track which doesn’t really live up to the rest of the album. It seems to be a lot softer and quitter, it doesn’t have the same punch as the rest of the album.
Sound wise, the album is pretty tight. Whoever recorded the performance did a good job Spike’s vocals are nice and clear while the instrumentals are nice and crisp as well. The in-between song banter can be somewhat humorous, although at times they are pretty dumb. Overall, Ruin Jonny’s Bar Mitzvah is a good cover album; they have taken some classic tunes and given them a punk rock twist. But that’s all it is, there’s a good chance you’ve heard all the songs before, so its nothing new in that aspect. But fans of the Gimme Gimmes will probably really enjoy the album.
