Model Society

Entertainment - Kitchen Disco Records

In case you hadn’t guessed Model Society‘s name is one that is deeply ironic, although you would have to have been off grid for at least five to ten years not to guess that. The band are evidence that love and hate are equal attractors, on the one hand they are bound by a shared of love of a decade straddling collection of band’s such as Wire, Bloc Party and Blur, on the other there’s… well, there’s pretty much everything else. Model Society are following in the footsteps of the many straight talking punk bands that highlight the inequalities and the steady erosion of our rights, issues that are sadly a regular and unwelcome feature of the dystopian times we live in.

Make no mistake, Entertainment is an EP that raises a subtlety defiant fist and sets it’s sights on a few well chosen targets. The opening blast of Spy takes aim at the surveillance society we live in with a soundtrack that is reminiscent of some of the punk scene’s elder statesmen. If you expecting three tracks of punk rage then you’re in for surprise, Are You For Real? follows up with a drop in pace on a track that addresses the disposable nature of pop music and the exploitation of those that briefly stand in the spotlight until their star has bunt out. The final track, Forever, is easily the EP’s poppiest moment, it brings things to a close with an almost jaunty verse that builds to a passionate and anthemic chorus.

Model Society are a band that take their cue from the political side of punk history, there is a message of defiance and hope contained on the three tracks that populate their latest release. Rather than screaming rage the band deliver their manifesto with a trio of melodic, coherent and focused songs with influences drawn from across the board. Whilst their stated influences are present, personally I can hear the echoes of the likes of Mega City 4 and The Senseless Things ringing throughout the Entertainment EP, the end result is that Model Society have delivered three cuts of thoughtful melodic indie fuelled punk rock that is delivered from the head and the heart.

The Entertainment EP is now available via digital platforms including Apple Music & Spotify via Kitchen Disco Records.
