You’ve heard of the Vulpynes right?, you know how loud and unforgiving the duo can be, well meet Molly Vulpyne and her not so shouty new EP, a breath of fresh melodic air in her repertoire can never be a bad thing, to move forward and stand out as someone thats not just angry, but vulnerable and thoughtful too. This wonderfully personal EP is a pay back in four instalments, there’s a sense of carrying you along for the ride, a need to share moments, and most of all have a few cheeky tilts at fun whilst doing it.

The raspy vocal and hazy guitars are what you might have expected from one half of a band that always play to their strengths, but the instant you get into ‘Dead In The Water’ it becomes clear that melody and clarity are uppermost here. The drums and beats that have been laid down by Meryl Streek give that sense urgency and foreboding that he’s renowned for, but with Molly’s vocal being, lets say, on a much happier and less shouty level, this is a combination thats gonna have you clamouring for the next track. ‘Romantic’ falls nicely into place then. This is without doubt the catchiest of the quartet, it’s upbeat and strangely heartwarming for a song thats speaks so much about being alone.
‘Nothing Fills’ comes in third, but not in a standings way, every song sits fully on its own as a moment that can be savoured, you’re made to feel that you’re being embraced within a mind that wants to open up just a little here and there. Love, vulnerability, and a frankness of thought is not held back on at any point, but this is not by any means a downer or a sad affair. ‘Nothing Fills’ possesses an edginess that’s intertwined stunningly with subtle melodies and a vocal thats crisper and clearer than you might have been expecting. Last up is the almost acoustic ‘Inertia Right Hand Man’, but the whole EP is filled with twists and turns, this track just goes all the way to underlining that fact that this is a whole new direction of writing and performing. Going by this offering it’s one that’s kicking down walls at every turn.
Is this the start of something wonderful? Yes. Do we hope that there will be more to come? Of course.
