New Candy's

Vyvyd - Little Cloud Records

New Candy’s are now Fernando Nuti, Andrea Volpato, Alessandro Boschiero and Dario Lucchesi, after a few years of upheaval, the band have now been able to release this their 4th full length with a settled line up.  Being a band that have toured relentlessly and grabbed the attention of many in the music world, this latest offering could easily have felt like pressure to produce, but it seems that this band take it all in their stride.

What comes out after a couple of years of writing and recording, in-between touring and obviously lockdown, is a slice of something very psych, but at the same time very eclectic, moments when it gets lost in it self a little, but then highs of brilliance, its an album that if played softly, does lose its way into the background easily, but when played at high volume, holds it’s own and more.

‘Twin Mime’ sets us off with a very Jesus Mary Chain atmosphere, which is backed up by the fact it’s producers include Tommaso Colliva who worked with said band.  Moving through the album as a whole it does give you a sense of 90’s psych/indie influence, but what brings it up to date is the need of the band to evolve the sound that lies beneath the fuzzy guitar and heavy bass lines, it brings vocal melodies to to the fore ‘Zyko’ and ‘Factice’ show this so well, although the latter does feel a little dated in part, although it does have some great licks, the former has a much better come and grab ya by the collar and listen quality.

What also gives this album a more modern approach than their previous offerings, is the use of electronic sounds and techniques to enhance the sound, never so much as in the stand out track of the album ‘Evil Evil’ and almost Theatre Of Hate ambience fills this song, but with less chanting and more melody.  Then comes the chilled flower power moment of tranquility that is ‘Helluva Zoo’ wonderful melody that somehow still drives the song along.

If there was a negative to this album, it would have to be the final 3 tracks, ‘The Clockmaker’ bounces along over the top of the tick tock beat, ‘Q-K’ has guitar licks that bring everything in the track together, a vocal that drifts along aimlessly, then ‘Snake Eat Snake’ just doesn’t quite hit the heights that the beginning of the album promised, a pity, but not everything can be perfect.

An album of highs and lows, the highs are reaching for the summit, but the lows just hold it back a little, defiantly play loud though.
