Philadelphia alt rockers, Nona, have returned from their short break up with their new and unexpected EP, Freaky If You Got This Far. Nona, which features members of Spraynard, All Dogs and Year of Glad, may have been inactive recently, but on Freaky If You Got This Far the band proves that they haven’t lost any of their style or swagger whilst they’ve been away. Nona delve deeper into the chunky fuzz driven amalgamation of nineties alternative and punk that was so wonderfully in evidence on their 2014 LP, Through The Head.

Freaky If You Got This Far opens with The World You Know and from the opening chords you know that Nona are back in business, the solid bass line, discordant guitar, riotous drumbeat and saccharine vocals sound like a headlong collision between The Breeders and Daisy Chainsaw. Sad Look is a more restrained affair that boasts a hypnotic drum beat and haunting refrain in the chorus and the epic closing track Water brings this all too short EP to a close and leaves you wanting to hear more. Nona have happily dived into the reservoir of nineties Alt Rock and have surfaced with an EP that very much bears the hallmarks of that style and era, but importantly they haven’t just recreated this sound, they have taken their influences and brought them bang up to date to produce this impressive three track EP.

Freaky If You Got This Far just isn’t long enough, this is just a teasing glimpse of what Nona have to offer second time around. Now that they’ve whetted our appetites I hope they can build on this EP, and their successful reunion show in July, and it won’t be too long before further tour dates and releases are announced. Freaky If You Got This Far is three slices of slick fuzzy alt rock that deserves to be heard, and I think we deserve to hear more.
