The SoDa Poppers Drop New Single “Not Even In Your Wildest (Fuckin’) Dreams”
Johny Skullknuckles (The Kopek Millionaires / The Dead Beats / Goldblade) continues his musical adventures with The SoDa Poppers and their brand new…
I’ve not encountered Prince Daddy And The Hyena prior to this review, their name is one that conjures up a myriad of possibilities for their sound, internet searches aren’t much help beyond discovering that band formed an “uncanny alliance” following a “cataclysmic event in East Kentucky” I was thinking that maybe they’re somewhere on the rock ‘n roll or rockabilly spectrum, just how wrong can you be? What Broken World Media have bought us with Prince Daddy And The Hyena‘s latest release is eleven tracks of fuzzy dysfunctional grass roots punk rock.
I Thought You Didn’t Even Like Leaving opens with the title track, from the off this is some seriously distorted fuzzy, but also melodic, punk with throat straining vocals, their lo-fi barrage certainly possess an infectious quality and I find myself drawn into the album before the first track is done and dusted. Things take a slightly darker turn with the chugging riff that indicates the start of the wonderfully titled I Forgot To Take My Meds Today and just as I think I’ve got a handle on the album, you get the wonderfully upbeat and poppy Clever Girl. Over the eleven tracks I Thought You Didn’t Even Like Leaving constantly veers between fucked up pop punk, appropriately enough the best example of this is Pop Song, dirty post hardcore and good old fashioned scuzzy punk rock.
Prince Daddy And The Hyena musically resemble Dinosaur Jnr. on amphetamines, the discordant guitar style is an ever present but their approach to songwriting is refreshingly diverse, despite their musical approach being obstinately single minded, the way they apply their distorted discordant style keeps the album from ever becoming repetitive. As I Thought You Didn’t Even Like Leaving is available as a name your price download you really have nothing to lose by giving Prince Daddy And The Hyena a listen, but you can also order the album on CD and Vinyl, or even pay a few quid if you decide to download, this will help support the label and the artist and allow them to continue to bring us more grass roots punk rock, can you think of a worthier cause? because I can’t.
