Protagonist – Jean Jackets In June

Protagonist were formed in 1999 in Boca Raton, Florida, they released their debut full length album, Hope & Rage, in 2003, and their latest EP bridges the long gap since the release of the States EP in 2011. Jean Jackets in June is their first release for Smartpunk, and with their new label comes a new direction.

Opening track Oklahoma starts with some mellow strumming, before a headlong riff and frantic drum beat almost runs you over with a fine two minute blast. It is followed by Hideaway, whilst this is a less frantic number, it boasts a solid crunching riff and keeps the attack coming. Titan returns to the headlong punk adrenaline rush and then things slowly ease down, the chugging guitar riff on the mid paced Let’s Get It makes a fine bridge between the frenetic punk rock and the final song. The title track is a departure from the tone of the rest of the EP, this a much more thoughtful number, whilst it contains the same attitude as the rest of the EP it is delivered with more restraint and carries a slightly melancholy tone.

Protagonist have made no bones about their love of post punk British bands such as Joy Division and The Smiths, I think that this influence shines through on the lyrical content of Jean Jackets In June, but it is clear that their punk roots lead the way musically and carry the melody, this is an impressive combination and as a result there isn’t a weak track in sight. This EP demonstrates that Protagonist are still creative and able to experiment with style and tone after almost two decades. Jean Jackets In June isn’t a departure from the previous works, but rather it shows a band that is evolving and progressing, if this is an indication of the direction they’re heading in then their next album should certainly be something to look forward to.
