Local Support - Self Released
You know the thing when you’ve heard so many bands that are for lack of a better description “in the same vein” well that was kind of how it felt listening to this second album by the Massachusetts fireball of a band Rebuilder, and I say fireball of a band, because this is a band that do grab you in places and set the world on fire, but as eluded to, this isn’t for every single song, and that’s not always going to happen with every band, so here’s what I got from their ‘Local Support’ album.
As you hear the first mournful moments of ‘Hanging On A Telephone Pt2’ it does exactly feel like that, but this is a builder as the band name suggests, they do like to build into some songs, but once it does get going, its defiantly straight up power rock/pop at its finest, songs about past relationships or friendships gone wrong, do tend to feel pretty much all the same I guess. Its when you get to one of the first songs that has guest artists on ‘Wedding Day’ features Spacey Casey Prestwood (Hot Rod Circuit) and Kailynn West (Tiny Stills), that you feel like this album is now getting up on its own feet and giving something fresh to your ears, this song begins with a wonderful solo and then hits the ground running, smashing the guitar strings like they deserve a good thrashing, drums that pound on your ears like thunder crashing and a vocal delivery that has you feeling the heartache that this songs resonates with.
Then its songs like ‘Look Down Club’, and the finisher ‘Disco Loadout’ that features Pete Wasilewski (Less Than Jake) and Chris Rhodes (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones), that grab you as a direction the band might head for and get them standing out from the crowd, the first is has a drum beat that just feeds the whole “I wanna be there my room jumping around” feeling to the hilt, it has all the energy that you’d expect from the genre this band seem to fit, yet it takes so much more influence and gives it a backdrop of ska that never quite breaks out, but is there all the same (I’ll even forgive the Wings intro), then to my favourite track, which being the last is kind of bitter sweet, but its country start just somehow gives this a fullness that somehow has you feeling chilled, then comes the kicker of an ending, full on triple caffeine hit energy here!. So did I enjoy this album, yes of course I did, in places it does exactly what it says on the tin, but then it jumps outside that tin and does stuff that needs doing maybe a little more, but either way, if your a fan of this genre, you are in for a treat.
Bossing the Power/Pop like its was their own, and then adding some ass kicking slices of off kilter greatness just when you need them.
Out on August 11th via Bandcamp
