Contemplating The Unknown - Thousand Islands Records
Montreal Punks Arising From are are set to release their sophomore EP, Contemplating The Unknown, today, October 25th 2018, via Thousand Islands Records, it follows on in the footsteps of the band’s self titled debut EP that was released in 2017. From the first spin I got a vague sense of deja vu and I couldn’t help but feel that this was an EP with something of an ironic title as Arising From have released an EP that wears it influences prominently on their collective sleeves.
From the opening blast of melodic hardcore that the opening track, Return To Sender, delivers I got the sense I was in familiar territory, Arising From‘s sound owes a heavy debt to the bands that populated the releases from the Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph Records stables in the late 1990’s. Did I say this was a bad thing? because it certainly isn’t, Arising From‘s sophomore EP delivers a solid five hits of punk rock and melodic hardcore, with the fine Fat Wreck inspired track Your Beliefs being my personal highlight from the handful on offer.
Arising From‘s EP comes across as something of a throwback, a somewhat loaded word, when I was recently deprived of the internet (thanks to a grab truck separating my internet cable from my house) it felt like I was cut off from the modern world, but a throwback can also be a reminder of something good from the past, Contemplating The Unknown is definitely in the latter camp. Arising From have released an impressive five track EP that harks back to golden years of the EpiFat punk bands, if you have any love for that era then Contemplating The Unknown will be a perfect fit for your playlist.
