Devilin Me - Self Released
it’s appropriate that Develin Me‘s latest EP, I’m Too Young To Be This Old, landed on my door mat just ahead of Halloween as this is the kind of bad tempered thunderstorm that accompanies mad scientists activities ahead of the villagers arriving with torches and pitchforks. As with their previous self titled EP Devilin Me are a band that channel the punk and alternative influences but they do it in an intense and stripped back raw style that is what I would imagine punk would sound like after the zombie apocalypse had taken place and society has crumbled.
The percussive beginning to I Need A Fucking Holiday is led by a steady rhythm and raw vocal that is an ode to getting away from the ‘bullshit people and they bullshit ways’, this is followed by Forgiveness that carries the same stripped down percussive approach but builds up the tempo. ESA sounds like the soundtrack for a wicker man ceremony for a benefits assessor, the EP continues the percussive folk punk with Fed and Run that lead up to the EP’s title track, a song that echoes a sentiment that many veterans of the punk scene can empathise with.
I’m Too Young To Be This Old boasts an unmistakable blend of influences including tribal, punk, industrial, folk and blues that are delivered with a unique percussive delivery and raw vocal, the only band I’ve ever heard that is even remotely comparable is the demented growling psychedelia of The Edgar Broughton Band. Develin Me‘s sound lies deep in the roots of English folk music, but this is not the soundtrack to the eccentric Spring ceremonies and rituals that take place in remote rural communities, this is the dark scuzzy soundtrack to disturbing midnight activities.
