Single Review: Discover A Fire – A Calculated Risk

Discover A Fire have just joined Disconnect Disconnect Records and celebrate this with the release of their latest single ‘A Calculated Risk’,

After self releasing their first album ‘The Rest Is Mystery’, now is the time to join forces with a passionate backer.

Coming from Norfolk you might be forgiven for wondering might this be a bit of watered down Skate Punk or maybe a little flat, but beyond the county comparisons, what you actually get when you drop the play button on ‘A Calculated Risk’, is something isn’t quite rock, not totally punk and possibly not even skate-able, its a heavy mix of hardcore frenetic drumming that is embossed by a guitar sound with English metal roots, simply put this is a never to be nailed down sound.

With a sound like this, you might expect the vocal to have a hard time keeping up, but that’s not the case, from the opening line you are led to expect a little Left Over Crack or something of just as random, but no, what you actually get is a rather standard yet frantic version of, well so many other rock/punk vocals, this none the less doesn’t fall into the trap of just being a clone band for the genre, rather they have an energy which is pushed along by the high tempo that never relents.

B-side ‘Reactions Speak Louder Than Words’ flows right along as perfectly as the title track, metal riffs, and a powerhouse back line, nothing not to like here.

A Calculated Risk have a place in this very cramped genre, defiantly rock, unapologetically punk and always loud!
