Single Review: Kid Klumsy – Spit Your Dummy Out EP

The seemingly omnipresent members of Dirt Box Disco are back again, not content with releasing their sixth studio album and constantly touring the UK and Europe the members have also split off into side projects, Spunk Volcano And The Eruptions are now established as a separate entity in their own right and now we have Kid Klumsy. The Spit Your Dummy Out EP, that will be released via STP Records on the 27th May, signals that Kid Klumsy have returned from the wilderness after a lengthy absence, as this is a release that represents their first new recorded material in fourteen years.

The opening chords of Grow Up tell you that Kid Klumsy are not a carbon copy of Dirt Box Disco‘s output, this EP carries a heavier influence of from the heavier end of the US pop punk scene with a few heavier influences creeping into the mix, although it does seem that they just can’t help themselves from letting elements of the drunk punk approach creep into the lyrics, especially on 24 Hours. For me it’s two songs that have been reworked from their earlier EP’s that are the stand out tracks, Sugar Junkies is the EP’s highlight with it’s infectious chorus with Bully Bullied The Bullies not far behind, but there isn’t a weak moment on the whole Spit Your Dummy Out EP.

All the woah’s, hooky choruses  and humour that you’d expect from a band borne of Dirt Box Disco are present, but musically this is a very different beast and this is a welcome change because as much as I love Dirt Box Disco there is no point in recreating their sound under a new moniker, much of the Spit Your Dummy Out EP is reworked from their original releases but the tracks are sharpened up and sound meatier than the originals. To make an EP that marks a departure in style from an established act is a brave move, but it’s been a worthy gamble for Kid Klumsy as this is an EP that to me slightly surpasses Dirt Box Disco‘s recent output, and that is no mean feat.
