Liverpool’s Last Reserves have been building a name for themselves in the North West of the UK, they’ve been steadily working towards the release of their new EP, Bad Days, through their own headline shows and supporting established first wave punk band’s such as The Dead Boys and The Ramonas, as well as releasing a steady stream of singles over the last two years. The Bad Days EP follows on from 2017’s Confusion single and will be released via Bandcamp on the 20th October, as an added bonus pre-orders for the EP get an additional five live session tracks thrown in.
Six Months opens up with a blast of punk rock that indicates that their stint with The Dead Boys made an impression on them, No Excuse sees them head back across the Atlantic and possesses all the aggression of the UK82 sound. Connected Generation addresses the narcissism of social media in Last Reserves typically abrasive style and Inside Out continues the assault before we get to the EP’s title track that is about exactly that subject. Last Reserves are a band who channel the first and second waves of US and UK punk rock, something that is fairly unusual in a band this youthful, but the result is a fresh take on the original punk sound, one brings it bang up to date and gives it a fresh lease of life.
The Bad Days EP is easily Last Reserves finest moment to date, it’s also the first release I’ve heard by them that comes close to catching their live energy. On their latest release the band have captured the scattergun approach of the original punk sound, every subject is receives the same level of venom, it’s also backed up by an abrasive and aggressive sound that recalls the original punk spirit. Last Reserves seem to be simultaneously ahead of the curve and forty years behind, they are out of step with the current scene and are doing exactly what they want, in my book you don’t get much more punk than that.
