Growing Pains - Sniffling Indie Kids

Montclair, New Jersey’s Tru are set to release their latest EP, Growing Pains, via Sniffling Indie Kids on the 22nd June, the five tracks that make up Growing Pains are centred around the concept that life just doesn’t get any easier as you get older, it just continues to become increasingly complicated. Given that Tru have only been with us since 2016 this places them in an ideal position to observe how the transition from youth to adulthood is one that will always carry Growing Pains.

The Growing Pains EP starts it’s journey with The Graduate, a melodic slice of Weezer-esque pop punk that then eases back into the mellow summery title track that takes them closer to the melodic indie pop of Grandaddy. Same Conversation Different Day is something that anyone who has to encounter those they have nothing in common with on a daily basis will be able to relate to, musically this takes a slightly noisier path into alternative influences, but retains the power pop and melody of the EP’s opening tracks, something that is carried through to Loneliness before Growing Pains gently fades away with the brief mournful piano led track, Peace Of Mind.

Growing Pains is a coherent and thoughtful EP that revolves around a central concept, the idea of concept albums evokes images of bloated seventies rock dinosaurs, thankfully this certainly isn’t the case with Tru‘s latest release. With the exception of the Peace Of Mind this is an EP that embraces the melodic and thoughtful emo influenced side of indie rock and shoe gaze, one that would be recommended for fans of the aforementioned bands and contemporaries such as Heart Attack Man and Colorblind.
