Something Corporate

North - Drive-Thru Records

Something Corporate are back with their sophomore release, North. Now, the sophomore release from any band can make or break a band’s career; especially one that was so well received by their debut album. SoCo have provided an album that will only push their career further.

To all you newcomers to the scene, you may not know exactly who SoCo are. They are a piano driven quintet. Andrew McMahon is the pianist and lead vocalist along with Brian Ireland on drums, Josh Partington and William Tell on guitar and then rounding of the group is Clutch on bass; all of which supply their vocal talents at one time or another during the album.

Listening to the album; you hear that the band has matured slightly since their last release. Everything is a bit tighter then the songs on Leaving Through The Window. The sound itself hasn’t changed much from one album to the other. It is still very melodic, smooth and calming. Of course there are sometimes when they do pick up the pace a bit, and move the sound up a notch. The only real change is the power behind Andrew’s vocal chords. This album they are covered by the musical instruments and don’t display the same power and magnitude that they portrayed in their first album. That is somewhat disappointing; but you can get over the fact quite easily.

The area in which the band has matured the most in is the lyrical content. Now, don’t get me wrong, Leaving Through The Window had great lyrics but the ones in North have a bit more powerful feel to them. Reflecting on the needs of a human being; problems of life and the just simply, the facts of life. Overall; if you enjoyed their debut album you won’t be disappointed by their newest effort in anyway at all.
