A Different Kind Of Difficult - Self Released
Specky Cult are on a journey of discovery and this is their second album on that journey, starting out as a fictional band from within a play, they have grown and evolved, is this release is the moving on into the unknown or is it a swing toward a new birth. Playing what is a wonderful mix of acoustic folk and electric rock, with a hint of punk, that the Speckies themselves, Rob Glover, Carol Stephen and Rob Carol, blend into a moment of theatre. It’s now got a life of its own, this album definitely showcases what they have learnt over the past few years, it also stands on its own as a musical nicety.

‘The Come Back Kid’ was released as a precursor and kicks of the album ‘A Different Kind Of Difficult’. A song that backs the underdog, a catchy song that bounces along and bounces back just as much as the story line does. ‘Love Crap’ is the first sign of the new Speckies, a rocky electric sounding start that still has that folk style lyrical and delivery. Although the album and songs are all pretty much stand alone and don’t stick to a narrative, you do still get that sense of theatre ‘Seriously’ is a dour affair without being as serious as the title suggests, ‘Alibi’ drops an almost Dylan esque intro that leads into a song that’s more about the vocal, its a reminder that this is a band that believe so much in the story telling as much as playing music.
Other acoustics are ‘Hell Before Breakfast’, ‘Pull The Plug’ and ‘Anthems And Tantrums’ which by the way gives off a Tenacious D vibe, but you’re also treated to some pretty ballsy rock songs too, much notably in the title track, which celebrates everything freaky and wonderful that lives in this world. A combination and culmination of growing and pushing those boundaries that need pushing, this album shows just what this band are capable of and how there is so much more to come even.
