The Knitting Factory - 21st July 2023
Philadelphia-based trio Stinking Lizaveta closed off the West Coast leg of their US tour with Telekinetic Yeti with an electrifying set at The Knitting Factory, NoHo last Friday.
While often described as playing “doom rock,” it could be argued that the music that they play is something else altogether, something that can’t easily be lumped into any one category. Their unique blend of metal and jazz–fusing heavy upright bass, explosive drums, and precise guitar–provide for an entertaining set. Even though the group is purely instrumental (aside from guitarist Yanni Papadopoulous’ occasional howl), their masterful musicianship keeps the crowd mesmerized.
The group displayed their eclectic arsenal of slow and dynamic melodies, raging riffs, and a disciplined and finely tuned rhythm section composed of Alexi Papadopoulous on the upright bass and Cheshire Agusta on drums. On stage, the group exudes enthusiasm. Their highly technical abilities and contagious energy make for a polished sonic landscape that remains rough around the edges.
On June 23rd, Stinking Lizaveta released their latest studio album, Anthems and Phantoms, which showcases the same genre-bending, clean, and concise instrumentals for which they have become known, making this album a testament to their lasting creativity, talents, and abilities.
