God Don't Make No Trash Or Up Your Ass With Broken Glass - Red Scare Industries
Considering the powerhouse lineup that The Falcon has, it was very strange that there was absolutely no press concerning the band until their EP, God Don’t Make No Trash Or Up Your Ass With Broken Glass, suddenly showed up on Interpunk.com. But who is this powerhouse lineup you ask? Well it’s none other then The Lawrence Arm‘s Brendan Kelly on vocals and guitar, Neil Hennessey (also from The Lawrence Arms) on drums, Dan Andriano from Alkaline Trio on bass, and Todd Mohney formerly of Rise Against (for Revolutions Per Minute) on guitar. So with all these big names on it, there’s no way it can disappoint, and it doesn’t.
But what does it sound like? Well think of the bands involve and you may get an idea. Think of the grittier Lawrence Arms songs picked up a notch with Alkaline Trio‘s bass lines along with the occasional acoustic guitar introduction. Lyrically, don’t expect literary references like you normally get from Brendan Kelly – its much more straight forward but they still don’t take a downfall. The standout tracks are definitely the first and last songs (both of which you can get samples from at Interpunk) as they are both very hard, gritty, and energizing. The vocals fly by and you cant help but get motivated as you sing along. Of course, the three middle tracks aren’t anything to look down upon either as they help throw a bit of a momentum switch so its not the same thing all the way through.
Since it was recorded entirely for free in various living rooms, bed rooms, and practice spaces, the sound quality isn’t superb. But really, you barely notice. It sounds more raw and exciting, making it much more real and enjoyable. So the only real downside is the length. Five short songs lasting just over twelve minutes leaves you waiting much more. But since they have said they’ll record a full length sometime soon, you know you will be able to hear more of The Falcon in the future. This is really for any fan of The Lawrence Arms and their gritty vocalist Brendan Kelly.
