Obnoxious - TNS Records
I’m pretty sure that this is a duo who took their name for its direct up front lack of tongue in cheek nature, why not be the cat that eats the rats of the world for breakfast? This is this duo’s second album and it’s definitely not “Cute Aggression” anymore. This is all out, take no prisoners, throwing the lions off the cliff and biting the ass of the lion trainers to boot, but with a wonderful side helping of the emotional and melodic.
In the spirit of not messing around, let’s just get straight to the point. ‘Boo Hoo’ hits the electric fence first, no sorry, it charges through and fries the the circuits to a crisp, harsh but needed words accompanied by what can only be described as a psychobillyesque banger of a tune. This isn’t just music and lyrics that horse whips its subject (and let me say this is the only use there should be for such a whip), this is angst born out of angst. ‘You Cannot Be Serious’ is a track that oozes emotional destruction, yet it gives as much as it takes in the every single way. This isn’t a cry for help, rather a word of warning, the words “your bliss boils my piss” and “I am worth more than this” have so much venom that even the guitar strings feel like they’re melting right before your ears. Follow this up with the title track ‘Obnoxious’ and there’s only one question, in my mind, who the fuck doesn’t get it! Having a dick, doesn’t mean acting like one, springs to mind, but even those words feel a tiny bit on the kind side, and to be honest, this song nails it so much better.
What’s so great about this album, what makes it stand out from the last offering, is it’s need to shit on everything that deserves to be shit on, the fuck you, I’ll speak not in riddles but with clarity of purpose. It’s also an album full of musical breadth, it uses as many layers as it needs to frame the poison darts being spat at its prey. There’s touches of Post Punk (that’s the stuff that sounds punk, but is a bit arty farty) in ‘Get It’, hints of hardcore pop up in ‘The Night At..’, Funk Punk Ska (made that one up just now) has its place in ‘Parasites’, and ‘Our Band Could Be Your Life’ is just slow and moody, but not for long. But what matters most about this album, is you’re never gonna get to the end and be in any doubt about what’s been said and what it means, not unless your some kind of mindless moronic misogynistic patriarchal cunt. Don’t just listen to this album and like it for being hard edged, no holds barred Punk, listen and know why these words are being said!!
