Timid Kooky – Baby Be My Spiderman EP

The one thing you always get from working at the Punk Site is variety, this comes in many guises, so for this one its not the music as such, but getting to hear what’s going on in the music scene in areas or countries you might not have heard much from.  So enter Timid Kooky, a Lithuanian rock/punk/metal band who apparently have been wowing the local and European scene recently.

This EP ‘Baby Be My Spiderman’ has taken what they are known for and smashed it into a short sharp five track concept beast, apparently the story line goes;    “Lyrically, Baby Be My Spiderman is a concept record about ego destruction, centered around an overconfident, macho hyper-masculine character who takes everything too seriously, cares too much about what

others think of him, and rides a bike just to look cool. “Eventually the feeling takes over him and he goes on an inner self-realisation journey while riding,” says Džiugas. “Every song is a phase he’s going through during the journey. In the end he finds himself, his inner peace—he is no longer driven by ego, he is free from himself.”   So glad this insight was included in the PR, because quite frankly, listening to the EP, I challenge you to hear any of this!

Musically this is a great mash up of rock/funk/noise and a few other influences thrown in just for good measure, a sound that is simply unique, the almost but not quite Offspring vocal cuts through every song with a primeval chant that has a metronome quality to it, good or bad?  You make your own mind up here.  The EP kicks off with ‘Westly Snipes’ and runs through ‘Baby Be My Spiderman’, ‘Win Big Lose It’, ‘Run Uphill’ and then its not until you get to the final track ‘Pats Sau’  that you realise this is actually 5 songs and you’re already on the last one!  Maybe its my untrained ear that feels like its not getting any differential from song to song, or this is how its meant to be, either way it does feel a little wasted, sonically they have something, just not sure its there yet, one song and your done feels like the premise here.

Love to see how these develop, the music is good, it just needs that production kick up the ass thing..
