Tiny Moving Parts

Celebrate - Triple Crown Records

Tiny Moving Parts are a Minnesota trio comprised of the Chevalier brothers, William and Matthew, and their cousin, Dylan Mathieson, so this is very much a family affair. They play music that goes by a ridiculous amount of genre names, I’ll just call it post hardcore or we’ll be here all day. This is their third album and it’s due to drop on the 20th May on Triple Crown Records.

Celebrate is ten tracks of intricate, some might say overly intricate, songs and by the time I’m half way through the album I feel like I’m starting to get deja vu. The constant ringing guitar notes, the stop start rhythms and intricate drum fills which fill all of the songs start to get a bit repetitive after a while. It quickly blurs from ten individual tracks into one long technical exercise that’s giving me a headache. As technically proficient as they clearly are, the level of skill required to play these songs is admirable, they should remember that just because you can do something complicated it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should do it all the time.

The blend of intricate post hardcore combined with a few poppier elements leaves me feeling that they sound like an overcomplicated version of Blink-182, possibly in a bizarre alternate universe where Mark Hoppus has stopped telling dick jokes. I can’t help thinking that Tiny Moving Parts would benefit from remembering that sometimes less is more
