No Guts All The Glory - Criminal Records
The super-industrious Weekend Recovery have struck again. Hot on the heels of their excellent False Company album, this EP finds the up-and-comers refining what has become a trademark approach – bright garage rock full of sass and riffs that isn’t tied into one template sound, overlaid with a thoughtful and affecting lyrical approach. This makes for a very engaging listening experience because Weekend Recovery are smart without being in your face about it.

No Guts All The Glory has plenty of bite, not least in the title track which is an urgent fuzzed-up stomper with a fierce shared vocal that careens its way to a howling feedback crescendo. It’s Obvious is mid-tempo, underpinned with a heavily chorused 80s goth bass and boasts a deliciously catchy singalong chorus. Blah Blah Blah is an internal dialogue, part self-effacing Instagram self-absorbed psychobabble, part angry real world dare (“what you waiting for?“). It is in the sublime The Same Shame that Weekend Recovery lay out their claim for greatness. It’s a super-breezy pop tune with an affecting undercurrent of regret in the delivery. It’s a song for the mainstream that’s 100 percent real and a perfect antidote to the anodyne yet omnipresent gurning of Sheeran and his ilk.

Weekend Recovery just need to breakout now from being the next big thing, to just being a big thing and staying there. They’re more than ready and have been for a long time. With a gathering weight of solid endorsements gathering from more mainstream tastemakers, it must surely only be a matter of time. And it can be done. If Wet Leg can underpin Match of the Day‘s summaries, Weekend Recovery can get in front of the millions they deserve. The past couple of years have been disruptive and have caused careers to falter. Weekend Recovery have been busy and gathering strength, If there’s any justice in this world – and, of course, it’s easy to be disheartened by recent events – this band will be huge. They’re nearly there. Tell your friends.
