Duality - Self Released
This album from London-based Euro/South American punk rock fuzz terrorists Yur Mum is already in the running to be the boldest, most in-yur-face statement of musical intent you’ll hear this year. Bassist Anelise Kunz and drummer Fábio Couto have created a brutally uncompromising and passionate soundscape that belies their stripped back, two-piece format, that also delivers moments of terrible and quite unexpected beauty amongst the slabs of heavy duty noise.
The title of the album refers to what the album PR calls a ‘fusion of contrasts’ and indeed this theme runs right through the Yur Mum universe – man/woman, Europe/Latin America, punk rock/latino influences. Even the album artwork created by Fábio melds the artistes’ faces to create an unsettling hybrid creature, a striking visual representation of how the two disparate musical forces combine to make one hugely powerful entity.
Musically, Duality is a mad rush through hi-energy bursts of grinding, fuzzed out punk rock. Sometimes frantic (Snakes Don’t Fly, Same Igual), sometimes monumental (Say Say, Hands To The Sky, Guilt), sometimes batshit crazy (the mostly backwards Go Back) and occasionally ethereal (Guilty), this is an album that demands you pay attention to it. Lyrically, it’s a series of astute observations on modern living mixed with more existential matters, a rich and intelligent text that complements the raw and abrasive power of the music. But it is the music first and foremost. Producer Alex Gordon has created a behemoth of an album that captures the fire and fury of the band’s live performances. Not easy listening by a long stretch. Absolutely recommended. You can catch Yur Mum at various UK and European dates, including Rebellion, HRH Punk 4, Raw Power Fest, Punktoberfest, Rock’n’Trolls, and Marchin Music Fest this year.
Duality is out now, distributed by Cargo Records across all major UK retailers on vinyl, CD and digital download.
