The 4th September will sees the release of Polyfillas’ debut album, An Assortment of Punk Originals, that is now available for pre-order on CD and vinyl via Elastic Stage and Bandcamp. Hailing from Sunderland, UK the young four-piece, which is made up of two couples, have spent the last three years building a reputation as one of the region’s most promising and exciting bands. The story began when Ava and Jamie Dangerous met in April 2022 and fell in love. They formed Polyfillas in early 2024 as a vehicle for their emerging songwriting, and self-released a couple of stripped-back acoustic singles. Soon the pair couldn’t resist the pull of “cranking up the gears a notch”, so they put out ads for other musicians. Their first single to feature electric guitar, drums and bass was the unforgettable punky-reggae anthem Rude Boys of England, which they released that July. An EP of the same name, which collected all the band’s work so far, appeared that October successfully melded punk, folk and reggae influences across its five tracks.

After a year of intense gigging, September 2025 saw the arrival of another couple, Liepa and Dennis on drums and bass, and Polyfillas began to finally realise their full potential on stage as well as in the studio. The new lineup released the dance-rock inflected Period Pad/I’m Glad tha dealt with the issue of period poverty and saw the band edging into new post-punk territory. Since then, Polyfillas have spent the last year gigging nonstop and finishing up the recording of their long-awaited debut album. An Assortment of Punk Originals is the result of over two years of hard work, love and dedication, and, as the title suggests, this is more than just your regular run-of-the-mill punk album.

From the riot grrrl-esque opener I’m Bored/I’m a Whore to the keyboard-swirling groove of closing track Life Sucks, the album takes in everything from punky-reggae of Rude Boys of England, to the faux-folk of Repeat the Defeat and the dance-rock of Period Pad/I’m Glad, along with plenty of feisty, take-no-prisoners rock ‘n’ roll in between. But because the whole album is underpinned by Polyfillas’ pop sensibilities, not to mention their love of authentic homegrown punk rock, and somehow all these careening styles manage to cohere. An Assortment of Punk Originals is expected to be just the first in a long line of major statements by the emerging Sunderland quartet. But in the meantime, the band look forward to bringing their chaotic and energetic live show back to small venues in the north-east, and hopefully beyond, in support of the album’s release, whilst Ava and Jamie, who get married on 25th July, celebrate their new life together.
