Ever since Malik Bendjelloul’s film Searching For Sugar Man won the 2013 Oscar for best documentary, there is a renewed focus on the continent’s diverse musical heritage. Keith Jones and Deon Maas have taken on punk rock with their latest film Punk in Africa which aims to bring a largely untold story to the world. It begins with the multi-racial punk movement in the 1970’s, encapsulating the political unrest in countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambiqe, through the 80’s post hardcore bands created out of the Soweto uprising and onto the Afrikaan inspired ska bands of the 1990’s.
The film features rare and unseen interviews and live footage from such bands as Suck, Wild Youth, Safari Suits, The Genuines, Hog Hoggidy Hog, Fuzigish, Sibling Rivalry, 340ml, Panzer, The Rudimentals, Evicted, Sticky Antlers and many more.
Punk in Africa is being released on DVD March 11th 2014 and can be pre-ordered here.
