Rebellion Festival Preview: Chaos 8

Ahead of this year’s Rebellion Festival we’ll be asking a selection of the band’s who are appearing about what we can expect, and for their advice on surviving the four day festival. In the first of The Punk Site‘s Rebellion Festival previews Beki Straughn of Chaos 8 and Loaded 44 has provided her insights into the festival, Beki is returning to the Rebellion Festival with Chaos 8 after a triumphant appearance on the Introducing Stage in 2017. The Rebellion Festival will be taking place at Blackpool Winter Gardens between the 2nd and 5th August 2018, the full line up for this years festival can be viewed here

Is this your first experience of the Rebellion Festival or have you played before?

Not at all. Loaded 44 played for 5 years running and played to bigger crowds each time. Then last year Chaos 8 played the Introducing stage which was a great gig and we were asked back this year. We’ve got the Arena stage this year and I’m so pleased because its so dark in there. We are more menacing in the dark!

What can we look forward to from your set?

We are releasing our new EP “Out of Control” at Rebellion this year. So, our set will include 3 new songs from that. It’s going to be the most full-on-in-your-face 35 minutes of industrial punk! We will also have vinyl copies (limited edition red vinyl) of our 2nd album “Cause & Effect”  and we will be blasting through some tracks from that too!

What makes the Rebellion Festival special for you?

I’ve been coming to Rebellion most years since 1996 when it was Holidays In The Sun and then Wasted. I’ve always loved seeing so many bands and friends.  Sometimes, it’s only at Rebellion where I get to see some people, so it’s a brilliant weekend of catching up and seeing what is going on, and seeing what is new, as the bands are from everywhere and I wouldn’t get a chance to see them otherwise.

Will you have the chance to catch anyone else whilst you’re there and is there anyone else on the bill you’d recommend people go and see?

I’m there all weekend so I’ll be in to see Svetlanas who are amazing, UK Subs, (obviously!) and I can’t wait to see Pascal Briggs on the acoustic stage too. I’ll be watching loads of bands but these are the first ones I circled on my list.

If you could pick one band to appear at the Rebellion Festival who would it be?

Backyard Babies. They could play every night 🙂

Do you have a favourite memory from a previous Rebellion Festival?

I have so many favourites! I couldn’t mention one without another one trying to out-do it. I would probably have loads more if I didn’t drink lager!

Are you currently on tour if so where else are you playing this year?

Not currently on tour but we have got some really great stuff lined up. We’ve got the Rebellion pre-show at Star & Garter in Manchester on 29th July, Then Rebellion (Sunday 5th August on the Arena Stage 3.25-4pm!), Then the Festival des Kultures in Chalais, France on 17th August. We have the Hard Drive Festival in Coalville on Sept 9th and then 4 dates in Germany starting in Essen on 19th Sept, Karlsruhe on 20th, Munich on 21st and Hamelin on 21st.

What can we look forward to from you in the next twelve months?

We’ll be finishing our 3rd album in the new year and having a launch party in Newcastle and booking loads more gigs to promote that. Hopefully, the ep and 3rd album released on vinyl. There will be another, longer German tour. We’ve got Nice & Sleazy in the marquee on May 26th and who knows what else!

Do you have any festival survival tips?

Don’t forget to eat!

Is there anything else in Blackpool you’d recommend people experience whilst they’re in the town?

The Tower Circus was always great (I haven’t been for a long while though so don’t come to me asking for a refund if it isn’t anymore!)

Finally when and where are you appearing?

Chaos 8 are playing on Sunday 5th August on the Arena Stage 3.25 – 4pm. Come and have your livers revitalised.

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us, we’ll see you down the front
