Rebellion Festival Preview: Jaya The Cat

Ahead of this year’s Rebellion Festival we’ll be asking a selection of the band’s who are appearing about what we can expect, and for their advice on surviving the four day festival. In the 14th of The Punk Site‘s Rebellion Festival previews we ask Jaya The Cat to provide their insights into the festival. Originating in Boston 1998, Jaya The Cat promptly relocated to Amsterdam, and with a crew of diverse and international musicians continue perfecting the art of making the perfect musical cocktail to get you through this night and into the next one, with equal parts reggae, punk, ska, a splash of electronics and a sprig of dub with a shot of whiskey on the side.

You can read about what to expect from Jaya The Cat at Rebellion below

Is this your first experience of the Rebellion Festival or have you played before?

I have vague memories of being there before yes.

What can we look forward to from your set?

Lots of music punctuated by short moments of relative quite and my bass player attempting to be funny before the music starts again.

What makes the Rebellion Festival special for you?

It’s home to some of the finest cut rate festival speed in the whole of the UK. Also it’s just rad. Seeing a bunch of punks of all ages become part of the charming sleeze of Blackpool makes for a pretty sweet post apocalyptic scene. It’s also one of the consistently friendlier festivals I’ve been to, through the madness mostly everyone tend to be very unpretentious and kind, and I always run into awesome people I didn’t expect to see there.

Will you have the chance to catch anyone else whilst you’re there and is there anyone else on the bill you’d recommend people go and see?

I’d like to pretend I’ve looked at the line up but I haven’t. I probably could look right now but I sorta prefer to wander around and let it all be a surprise. There’s always a bunch of great stuff!

If you could pick one band to appear at the Rebellion Festival who would it be?

Tom Jones. That dude is punk af and I think the crowd would go mad.

Do you have a favourite memory from a previous Rebellion Festival?

See question one.

Are you currently on tour if so where else are you playing this year?

We’re sorta always on tour, the summer is fun cause it’s festivals and you get to chill a bit more, we have a ton of stuff around Europe and Scandinavia coming up, and we’ll be up in Russia at some point soon as well.

What can we look forward to from you in the next twelve months?

I feel like this is the kinda of leading question your girlfriend asks when she doesn’t want you to forget your anniversary or her birthday. You’ll get that pony and that Gucci bag darling, don’t worry. I put a reminder in my phone.

Do you have any festival survival tips?

Don’t forget to eat breakfast. Also, don’t panic, no one in the history of festival goers ever really lost their drugs, just keep turning out your pockets over and over again in a port-o-potty, they’ll turn up eventually. Probably Tuesday morning when your mum is doing your laundry.

Is there anything else in Blackpool you’d recommend people experience whilst they’re in the town?

Everything. Go to the crappy fair on the pier. Wander down the “beach” and breath in the smell of salty sea air and regret. Blackpool is hilarious. Get out there and be someone.

Finally when and where are you appearing?

Saturday night at 10.45pm you can see our faces at The Pavilion.

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us, we’ll see you down the front
