Popes Of Chillitown

Work Hard, Play Hard, See You In The Graveyard - Self Released

London Ska Punk outfit Popes Of Chillitown are set to return with their third full length, Work Hard, Play Hard, See You In The Graveyard, that is set to be with you on May the 4th, the initial description does them a disservice as Popes Of Chillitown are anything but a straight up ska punk band as their sound is a fusion of ska, punk, two tone, drum & bass, reggae dub and the lyrical flow of hip hop. Whilst the ska punk element of Work Hard, Play Hard, See You In The Graveyard will make you reminisce back to your teenage years, this is a release with so much more to it than being a throwback to the days when Less Than Jake walked the earth.

Prang kicks things with a fast paced skanking riff, initially you think that this is going to be another ska punk by numbers album but the track breaks down into a mellower dub at the midway point to throw you off course. This is an album that continues to channel a diverse range of influences that are all wrapped round a solid core of ska, grime and hip hop influences are brought into the mix and the album constantly shifts in style, there are heavier moments of dub and reggae, times when punk takes the lead and the album’s tracks break down or speed up almost at will to keep Work Hard, Play Hard, See You In The Graveyard away from the generic ska punk template that has become all too familiar in recent years

Popes Of Chillitown are akin to The Specials for the 21st century, all the core elements that informed that influential band’s sound are present, but as another three decades have passed there are other dimensions bought into the mix. Work Hard, Play Hard, See You In The Graveyard maintains it’s social consciousness throughout with lyrics that are spat out and toasted in equal measure, with their third full length the Popes Of Chilltown have delivered an album that brings a breath of fresh air to the overcrowded ska punk scene.
