Album Review: The Media Whores – A Decade Of Defiance

Any album that bears the slogan ‘Stop Making Stupid People Famous’ is already well on it’s way to winning me over, this is the first impression of The Media Whore‘s run through their last ten years, or as they put it, A Decade Of Defiance. The Media Whores latest release takes a look back at the last decade with tracks culled from their three previous full lengths, Starfishing, Pornophonica and Dangerous Minds and the Critical Political EP, but A Decade Of Defiance is not just a retrospective, there are also three brand new tracks that provide a taste of their forthcoming full length.

From the opening duo of Cold War and Money, both previously unreleased tracks, you know that you’re in for over an hour of raw political punk rock that takes it cues from the fathers and forefathers of the scene. The Media Whores have always kept their sites aimed firmly at the establishment, and sadly the current state of world politics means they have no shortage of targets, musically they take influences from punk, proto punk and the 60s garage scenes, but there are unexpected moments where they dip into dark seductive lounge music, whilst this is something of a musical departure their political focus remains firmly in place.

If you need an introduction to The Media Whores then A Decade Of Defiance is a damn fine starting point, it must be said this is not bt any means a punk by the numbers album, The Media Whore‘s sound is an amalgamation of everything that’s mattered since the 1960’s that is delivered with punk’s energy and attitude. What makes this retrospective really stand out is that my favourite moments were all culled from their next album, so with ten years under their belt and another album already waiting in the wings it would seem The Media Whores aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, here’s to another decade of defiance.
