Castoff – Self Titled EP

San Diego melodic skate punks Castoff have been with us since 2012, their latest release is this self titled three track EP.The Castoff EP is the follow up to their debut full length, First Step To Recovery, that was released at the start of this year. Impressively the EP is released with all profits going to charity, Castoff will be released today, August 5th, it will be available as a digital download through Castoff’s Bandcamp, with the proceeds going to the charity Help A Mother Out.

The opening track, The Trite And The Trivial is a sub one minute opener that sounds like the amphetamine riddled love child of Pennywise and Lagwagon. Commonality follows up the frantic introduction, it has the same influences in the sound, but there’s room for them to spread the wings, the songs features breakdowns, and it has more than a touch of early skate punk about it, think of a contemporary pre-metal Suicidal Tendencies and you’re about there. Whilst the first track was a bit too short, the second a bit too long, well track three, Resources, is just right. This is an intense number that just keeps the attack coming, and is by far my favourite of the trio of songs that appear on this EP.

Castoff‘s latest release is an impressive amalgamation of skatepunk and punk rock, with just a hint of metal in it’s DNA. This would be an impressive EP just on it’s own merits, as it’s a fine seven minutes of punk rock, but as it’s also supporting a worthy cause you really do have nothing to lose by purchasing this. The charity in question, Help A Mother Out, works to improve baby and family well being by increasing access to diapers for families in need. A family’s access to a reliable supply of clean diapers reduces the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, improves baby’s health and comfort, and enables a baby’s participation in early care and education programs.
