Commonwealth Choir

No End - No Hope Records

Commonwealth Choir are a band that came together around 2011, originally from Pennsylvania but then moving to Philadelphia where they consolidated their line up. After the release of various singles and an EP, they drew on many influences that evolved the sound and gave them a live presence that they used to full effect in countless shows. The last single before this EP was ‘Palace’ back in 2015, then followed by some line up changes and fewer live shows, this gave them time to bring about the quality of sound that stands out ‘No End’ from the crowd.

Five tracks full of depth and conviction, add up to a wonderfully diverse combination of styles that still tie together perfectly.  ‘Light’ being the lead track, has its roots in pop punk, but draws together raw rock power with a love for story telling, this also moves forward through ‘Palm Reader’ in which you are found to be also dragged along by some sexy little riffs and infectious hooks that seem to have barbs attached for good measure.

What Commonwealth Choir do seem to have latched onto within a jacket of pop-punk, is a huge sense of what can be used from modern and classic rock too, this drops perfectly in ‘Treehouse’ an almost too short but wonderfully formed slice of Tom Petty esk lyrical beauty and soundscape.

With the addition of synth and what starts of feeling like an snap back to 80’s pop, soon unfolds out into ‘Down’ which has an underlying darkness that creates atmosphere but still has an uplifting feel, maybe a little more commercial sounding than other tracks this one.  On, or is it back to ‘2010’ simple in its use of snappy hard hitting drum beats, catchy compelling melody and words that create a life which sit at the heart of this EP throughout.
