You're So Boring You Make Me Wanna Die - Self Released
The second solo outing for the Delinquents and Spacers frontman finds David in reflective form for these three tracks. Mostly acoustic but subtly embellished with electric guitar, keyboards and a sprinkling of backing vocals, this is another glimpse into a very personal space that doesn’t descend into maudlin rambling. This is, in part, due to the rawness of the performance – if the voice wavers and cracks in places, it is because this is real stuff, honestly expressed.
David‘s songwriting is first class and this stripped-down showcase proves yet again that genre is no indicator of style. This is absolutely punk in its origins and execution. Sonically, there are hints of Green Day in their mellower moments, and of Jake Burns in his more melodic moods. But this is not derivative stuff. These three songs would stand in any genre or style.
David‘s grasp of melody and arrangement means that his songs are immediately affecting. It’s direct and heartfelt. Lyrically, we get to see the full emotional journey of a relationship. Home Fires documents the optimism and yearning that sustains relationships and the hope that the strength of feeling can be maintained. Prince Charmless examines the emotion behind knowing you’re the wrong boy but struggling to work through those issues to make an unlikely relationship work. You’re So Boring You Make Me Wanna Die is the reverse, the swansong of a dead relationship where nothing is left but the desire to be utterly free of the person you’re breaking up with.
Authentic and emotional without being cloying, this is a great EP from an artist unafraid to tackle human relationships in a frank and open way. Also, dammit, very catchy.
You’re So Boring You Make Me Wanna Die was recorded at Seagate Studios by Graeme Watt and features backing vocals from fellow punk rock troubadour Sean Cairns. You can stream You’re So Boring You Make Me Wanna Die via Spotify and Apple Music.
