My Heart Will Always Be The B-side To My Tongue - Fueled By Ramen Records
Fall Out Boy are back with their second release on Fueled By Ramen Records, My Heart Will Always Be The B-Side To My Heart, an acoustic DVD/EP. Most of you already know the name Fall Out Boy courtesy of their popular album Take This To Your Grave. That CD propelled the band to the top of the charts becoming everyone’s over night favorite. Wanting to try something new, the band have released a 5 song acoustic EP featured 3 new songs, a Joy Division cover, and an acoustic version of their second single, Grand Theft Autumn/ Where Is Your Boy along with a DVD showing the last year in Fall Out Boy‘s life.
We’ll start first with the CD. In classic Fall Out Boy fashion they have long, complicated, ultra-emo titles like My Heart Is The Worst Kind Of Weapon and “It’s Not A Side Effect Of The Cocaine, I Am Thinking It Must Be Love”. Patrick Stump’s catchy, melodic, polished vocals are still there; and after a few listens you find yourself singing along at times, especially the acoustic remake for Grand Theft Autumn and Nobody Puts Babe In The Corner. Unfortunately, the band does lose some of their power that made them so popular in Take This To Your Grave. The uptempo melodies full with amazing hooks and riffs aren’t as evident anymore. The band is really a lot stronger plugged in. After a few listens, you do start to enjoy it, but its still not quite the same.
Now onto the second half of the package, the DVD. Like the CD, the DVD also has five parts. The first part is The Story, here they give you a little insight into the band. The talk about how they got together, the “accident” on the way to shooting the video for Grand Theft Autumn, Take This To Your Grave, the live experience, the upcoming album, and more. Its a fun watch, and you learn some things about the band you didn’t know before. The next part is The Videos, where they have the two music videos for Dead On Arrival and Grand Them Autumn/ Where Is Your Boy. It was nice to finally see the GTA video as I have yet to see that one. Next is the Performance section, where they filmed the band doing a personal acoustic performance in a small room to fans and friends. They played around 4 songs to the excited crowd and had tons of crowd participation. The band was obviously enjoying themselves as was everyone else, which is always nice to see. Next they have The Cutting Room Floor, where they just have random clips of the band doing crazy things. The best part in that section is when they convince one woman that they are all members from other bands (New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Thursday, etc.). The final section is Extras, where they have a photo gallery, credits, and songs from other Fueled By Ramen artists. Overall, this was a good music DVD that any FOB fan would enjoy.
