Turn To The Bright - Turn To The Bright

All the Solid State Records fans who picked up their new compilation, This Is Solid State Vol. 5, were introduced to Tooth And Nail Records‘s latest signing (yes, they are on T&N not Solid State): Far-less. Many people wondered why they were on Tooth And Nail instead of Solid State, but after listening to their new EP, it’s quite obvious.

The six song EP, Turn To The Bright, features two instrumentals (tracks one and six) along with four songs with vocals. Despite opening up with the harder Scorched Earth Policy (which was on the compilation), the rest of the EP leans much more towards the rock side of things. Which is why they fit more into the Tooth And Nail roster then the Solid State one. Far-Less stay within the boundaries of melodic and heavy rock, with some screaming added to it. Fans of Emery will probably really like it, although they are missing the keyboard. But that isn’t to say that Solid State fans won’t like it, chances are if you liked Scorched Earth Policy, then the rest of the album will appeal slightly towards you; but, the other songs do tend to lead more towards the melodic chorus then the screaming verses.

The Mountain Song is definitely the song showing the most potential from the young band with your basic rock melody and friendly vocals, meaning there isn’t tons of screaming in it.Now don’t get me wrong, the screaming sounds good for the most part on Turn To The Bright; but at times they go a little too far and it disrupts the flow of song.

The weirdest part about this EP are the instrumentals, neither of which even show up on the track listing. They seem to be sort of a waste of space. It would’ve been better to make them into a song, or cut it down to only one instrumental.

Turn To The Bright shows some potential and gives you an insight as to what to expect from the band in the future. But their best moments are when they play the heavier rock style more then the screaming one.
